Imagine a day with no negativity!

In today’s fast-paced, high stress society, wouldn’t it be great if a day were devoted to cultivating positive thoughts, positive emotions, and overall positive energy?

Imagine no negative thoughts or actions in all of our schools, homes, and places of work: no negative office gossip, no complaining, no road rage, no yelling and no self-doubt!

That’s the kind of vision Jon Gordon is holding. He knows we can have a huge impact on the world around us if we shift our attention to the positive and that’s why he’s declared April 27, 2007 a Global Day of Positive Energy.

Jon is a leading authority on developing positive, engaged people, leaders, businesses, schools and teams. He is the author of several books, including The Energy Bus: 10 Rules to Fuel your Life, Work and Team with Positive Energy. His proven solutions are being put to use by executives, athletes, artists, parents, teachers and numerous organizations throughout the world. He is also the co-founder of the Positive Energy Program, a non-profit initiative to help develop healthy, positive kids.

Jon’s positive message is so inspiring that I wanted as many of my students as possible to join in on April 27 this year. Read more about Jon’s simple but powerful way of changing the world through positive action in his article below. Enjoy!

The Power of a Kind Act

If you were kind to 5 people and each of these people were kind to 5 people, and this pattern continued for only 10 days—19 million people would have received kindness from another. Talk about exponential power!

Another perfect example is illustrated in the research of John Gottman, which he describes in his book, The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work. Gottman found that marriages are far more likely to succeed when couples experience a 5 to1 ratio of positive to negative interactions. Marriages with a ratio of 1 to 1 positive to negative interactions were likely to end in divorce. Have you hugged your partner (at least five times) today?

Balancing Your Energy Bank

Let's face it. We know it isn't always easy to create positive interactions, especially in inherently negative situations. Just last week I was almost bumped from a flight in St. Louis by an unfriendly gate agent who unapologetically told me I wouldn't be able to fly because it was overbooked. I did my best to stay cool and not react to his less-than-kind delivery.

Reacting to negativity is natural and reflexive. But the important thing is to be aware of the benefits of positive interactions and strive to create them proactively to keep our positive to negative interaction ratio optimal. Sort of like making deposits in the relational bank account.

Positive interactions build your savings, negative ones are a withdrawal. Obviously, no one wants a zero balance, and you sure don’t want to go into the red. Remember, what we focus on, expands—so focus on the positive and make deposits often. A smile, a hug, a kind act will pay dividends down the line.

However, this doesn't mean we take a Pollyanna view of the world. Research conducted by Barbara Fredrickson from the University of Michigan found a working group that experienced a positive to negative interaction ratio of 13 to 1 was less effective.

Apparently, too much fun is counter-productive. Witness the positive interactions in a kindergarten class; giggles fests abound, but not a lot “academic achievement” happens. Confronting real problems and challenges is imperative, at least in the adult world, in order to get the job done.

In the end, we can never undervalue the kind word, meaningful conversation, or honest dialogues that can occur when we take a positive tack. It’s well known that the simple act of smiling increases the level of serotonin—a neurotransmitter involved in mood control. What’s less well known is that it does so in both the giver and receiver of the smile.
