The strategy is called Imagineering—a term coined by Walt Disney to describe the process he used to form dreams and then turn them into realities. It involves the coordination of three sub-processes: Dreamer, Realist and Critic, each is necessary to identify effective solutions to a variety of challenges.

Dreamer
The Dreamer is oriented towards the longer-term future. It involves thinking of the bigger picture and the larger chunks in order to generate new alternatives and choices. The emphasis of the Dreamer stage of is on representing and widening the perception of a particular plan or idea. Its primary focus is on generating the content or the “what” of any plan or idea.

Realist
The purpose of the Realist is to turn the dream into a workable plan or product. The Realist wants to act as if the dream is possible and focus on the steps or actions required to actually reach it. The primary focus is on “how” to implement the plan or idea.

Critic
The Critic phase of creativity follows the Dreamer and Realist. The purpose of being a Critic is to evaluate the plan or project that has been proposed, and look for potential problems and “missing links.” To be an effective Critic, it is important to take the perspectives of people who might influence, or be influenced by, the plan or project (either positively or negatively), and consider their needs and reactions.

Putting it into Action

By using Disney’s success strategy as a model you can learn how the Dreamer, Realist, and Critic sub-processes work in symphony with one another to create a successful outcome. You can also learn how leaving out or improperly sequencing any of these sub-processes can spell disaster!  

A Dreamer without a Realist for example, cannot turn ideas into tangible expressions. A Critic and a Dreamer without a Realist just becomes stuck in perpetual conflict. A Dreamer and a Realist might create things, but they might not be very good ideas without a Critic. The Critic helps to evaluate and refine the products of creativity. When destructive, a Critic is a “spoiler”; when constructive, a Critic is an “advisor”. Effective innovation and problem solving involves a synthesis of these different processes or phases.

While Disney used his Imagineering strategy to develop high quality animated films, the basic elements of the strategy can be used in practically any situation where planning and decision-making is involved. Balancing the fundamental perceptual positions of the Dreamer, Realist and Critic in the service of a common vision is no doubt a fundamental strategy of all genius.
